…I did it again, didn’t I?

27 05 2013

Woops.  Looks like I went on another long hiatus unannounced?  At least this one wasn’t a year and a half long? I apologize, friends.  I know I disappointed a lot of people last time and I’m sure I did it again.  I was depressed and shit and blah blah whatever.

Hopefully I can get back into blogging here within the next few weeks.  Really, I just wanted to let you guys know about this research paper I’m working on.  I just transfered to the University of Colorado at Boulder and I’m taking one of those ridiculous 3-week courses.  On the plus side, though, the class is Japanese Pop Culture.  Man, I am learning so much.

But anyway.  My research paper.  I’m writing it on idols.  Particularly, AKB48 and Morning Musume.  Even more particularly, the marketing of these groups towards each male and female fans, both positively and negatively.  I’ve read just about all the scholarship on idols and idol culture at this point.  Seriously, I’ve just learned so much that has shed so much light on issues that I’ve seen us in the English-speaking wotasphere struggle with so long.  We’re taking our Western ideas out of context with a very, very Japanese ideal.  It’s made me reconsider a lot of the things that have sent us all up in arms over the years but seemingly not the Japanese wota.

To keep you interested, I am using Wota in Translation as a primary source.  My professor absolutely loves it.  Henkka, you will be sourced in my research paper.

Anyway again.  I can’t wait to share with you some of what I write (though not all if it unless somehow I get kicked out of school for plagiarizing myself–I’m definitely waiting until I get my final grade).  I know a lot of you will be like “WOAH.  THIS IS SO INTERESTING.”  as I was.  Also, I’m a great academic writer (better than this informal shit if you can believe it </sarcasm>).  I won’t be able to un-realize all that I’ve realized doing my research, either, so my blogging might have a fundamentally different outlook that it did before.

That said,  I still cannot fathom for the life of me either why Tanaka Reina was so popular or why she was considered the perfect Morning Musume member.

That is all friends.

I will see you soon.

It Has to be Said…

10 10 2012

I’m sure at some point over the past several weeks you guys have seen the songs released by “AKB48 Team Surprise” which is a shuffle of the members for a new single each week.  I’m not sure how long it’s going on for, it reminds me of Koda Kumi’s 12 singles in 12 weeks back in 2005/2006, so maybe it’s for 12 weeks.  I forgot, to be honest.

It started off pretty well.  “Jyuryoku Sympathy” is pretty catchy.  Has Acchan.  Not a lot to complain about there.  Typical AKB48 and a nice way to ease us out of Acchan.   Read the rest of this entry »

AKB48 (and Friends) Team Shuffle

26 08 2012

At AKB48’s first day of a 3-day concert at Tokyo Dome, the manager of the Theater supposedly shocked everyone, including the members, by announcing the second AKB48 Team Shuffle.  Last time we had a shuffle, it really wasn’t such a huge deal because there weren’t any spin-off/sister groups, nor were there any graduations involved, nor were any of my favorites being shifted around.  I’m a bit grumpy about the changes we’re seeing.   Read the rest of this entry »

AKB48’s “Yume no Kawa” MV

18 08 2012

Ah, it’s finally here…  Maeda Atsuko’s graduation.  In a little over a week, her last single with AKB48, Gingham Check, will  be released.  A PV for one of the songs on the single, “Yume no Kawa” (River of Dreams), has been released.

(Note: this version is slightly pitched up to avoid getting taken down.  It probably will be anyway, so check out the original full PV at Tokyohive.)   Read the rest of this entry »

Uh. What?

25 03 2012

I’ve been an AKB48 fan for years.  I haven’t blogged much about them because… well, I was always more concerned about H!P and I didn’t know any of their names, so “the one with this coloured bow” became a bit difficult to blog about.  However, last year I started to get really attached to the group when their singles got really awesome and Morning Musume’s became really awful.  I started to learn names and develop favorites in AKB.  And the first of both of those was Maeda Atsuko….

Who just announced her graduation from the group.  She’s been the most popular member nearly from the start and has been in every single the group has ever released.  I mean, what?  I know she’s busy, but damn, she’s the top of the top.  Maeda Atsuko is a household name.  The most popular member of the most popular idol group in Japan?  Good God.  It’s evident that this was her own choice, but I don’t know what Aki-P is thinking letting her go through with this…. I’m super depressed.

I wish her luck in acting, which is what I’m assuming she’s leaving to focus on… but I don’t care for her as much in acting as I do in AKB.  Ugh.  I hate graduations.

Takamina, if you even as much as think about graduating, there will be hell.

30 Day Idol Challenge 19&20 ~1 Day/Admiration~

21 02 2012

Oh dang, I missed a day.  Actually, I just didn’t feel like writing yesterday after work.  So today I bring you days 19 and 20 of the 30 Day Idol Challenge.  The first one is an idol you would like to be for one day and the second is an idol you admire.

I admire the first one, but I don’t think I’d want to be the second one for a day.  I tried to think of an idol that fits both, but unfortunately, I can’t.  So, the first one, an idol I’d like to walk  a mile in the shoes of is…

30 Day Idol Challenge 14 ~IDOLING!!! Member~

14 02 2012

Day 14 of the 30 Day Idol Challenge is your favorite IDOLING!!! member.  Well, I’m not going to lie, I don’t know a single member’s name.  In fact, if you mixed them with idols from other groups, I couldn’t tell you who was an IDOLING!!! member.  I’ve seen one of their PVs, “MAMORE!!!”, and their collaboration single with AKB48, “Chuu Shiyouze!”

So… I can’t really answer this one.  Out of four songs of there’s that I’ve tried, one being half AKB48, I only liked two of them (and I really loved the two, and really hated the other two).  I think I might like them as I hear more from them, but right now, they’re pretty “meh” to me.  I’m still trying to find something in IDOLING!!! that I can’t find in every other idol group.

In other words, come back tomorrow for something relevant to the prompt.
